{ Green Tip #3 }
January 22, 2008I know it’s hard to imagine a world without fresh drinking water, because we have it right at our fingertips, whenever we want it.
But here’s something to think about… North Americans use as least twice as much water per person as anyone else in the world. By 2025 (only 17 yrs away!) the world will have to increase it’s water supply by 22% in order to meet its current needs. Meanwhile, 40% of the drinking water we use is flushed down the toilet!!
Here’s something easy you can do: Take A Shorter Shower! (Even by 2 minutes!)
If everyone shortened their showers by 2 minutes every day, over one year it would equal almost 3 times of the amount of freshwater drawn from the Great Lakes every day. (The Great Lakes are the world’s largest source of freshwater). The amount of water you use in 2 minutes is more than the average African person would use in an entire day. Something to think about.
Another easy thing you can do is make sure you turn off the tap while your brushing your teeth. So many people leave the tap running while they brush their teeth.. which results in so much fresh drinking water completely wasted!!
See how simple it is? I challenge you to at least try to take shorter showers this week.. once you get used to it, you won’t even notice the difference, and you’ll feel great because you are making a difference.

January 8, 2008Washing your car in a commercial car wash is better for the environment than doing it yourself!
Commercial car washes not only use WAY less water per wash (up to 100 gallons less), but they also recycle and re-use rinse water.
If everyone did this just one time, up to 8.7 billion gallons of water could be saved, and 12 billion gallons of soapy polluted water could be diverted from rivers, lakes, and streams.
Hmm… looks like I need to head to the car wash…

{ Green Tip #1 }
December 29, 2007Yup. Thats me. I am not ashamed!! :)
I’m reading a few good books right now that have some really easy things you can do (or not do) to be more environmentally friendly… so I thought I’d share some of my favorites…
The first tip comes from this book:
So here’s Tip #1:
Don’t ask for ATM receipts. If everyone refused their receipts, it would save a roll of paper more than two billion feet long, or enough to circle the equator fifteen times!
Stay tuned for more!
Charlotte: hey naomi!! im reading this book right now too and i love it!!!! its got so many great ideas. i highly recommend it to everyone as well!!! talk to you soon!
Joy: naomi what a great idea to share these tips.. i will be looking forward to some more! this is such an easy thing that anyone can do, and it makes a big difference! looking forward to our photo session!!
Enna: Hey, I got this book for Christmas! I love how simple some of its suggestions are.
Frank Myers: Naomi, Elizabeth and I love your work and appreciate all of your participation on the Pictage blog. We are treehuggers as well and appreciate your efforts at education... Frank and Elizabeth Myers
Tracy Vogel: As a fellow treehugger, I thank you for the heads up about this book.
Beaton Photography: ooh great suggestion naomi! I've been following the eco-weddings & green weddings, but am trying to figure out more ways to reduce my waste as a wedding photographer! I guess eventually I need to go to all digital proofing, but some clients really like the hard copies! Thanks for sharing!
mary: yay treehuggers! another thing i do, which puzzles cashiers/bagger is if i buy something that i can obviously carry without a bag or put in my huge purse, i tell the bagger/cashier that i don't need a bag. it is quite funny when you see the looks on their faces...
